Ink cartridges are broadly divided into two types - one with printheads and the other with out printheads. The obvious differentiating factor between them for a normal user is price. The ink cartridges with out printerhead are normally cheaper than those with printhead. The printers that use cartridges with out printhead have built-in printheads.
Since the cartridges with out printheads are cheaper, people are inclined to purchase printers that use them. While the ink cartridges of Lexmark and Dell brand are with printheads, those from Brother, Canon and Epson are with out printheads. HP manufactures printers with both types of ink cartridges.
